Epstein Files Reveal Bannon’s Plot Against Pope Francis
CNN reported on Saturday that the newly disclosed correspondence, part of a recent batch of documents, shows that Bannon viewed Francis — who passed away in 2025 — as a significant ideological rival to his nationalist-populist objectives. Bannon allegedly sought Epstein’s assistance in efforts to oppose the pontiff.
In a message from June 2019, Bannon wrote: “Will take down (Pope) Francis,” and added, “The Clintons, (Chinese President) Xi, Francis, EU -- come on brother.”
The CNN report noted that the exchanges also covered French journalist Frederic Martel’s provocative book In the Closet of the Vatican, which explores secrecy and power dynamics within the Catholic Church.
Bannon proposed that Epstein, who died in jail in August 2019, could act as executive producer for a possible film adaptation, stating: “You are now exec producer of ‘ITCOTV’ (In the closet of the Vatican).” Martel told CNN he believed Bannon aimed to “instrumentalize” the book in his campaign against the pope.
Although Bannon is no longer an advisor to US President Donald Trump, he continues to host a podcast and maintains influence among the president’s close circles.
